The Virginia State Bluegrass and Folk Competition

If you or your band are located in Virginia, then we want you! Please click HERE to download the registration forms you will need to enter the official Virginia State Bluegrass Competition.

The Virginia state bluegrass and folk contest has been held every year since 1957. Musicians and bands from all around Virginia have come to show their skills. Each year a state champion is chosen for each of the following categories:

  • Bluegrass Band
  • Male Vocal
  • Female Vocal
  • Guitar (flat picking or finger picking)
  • Banjo, Bluegrass
  • Mandolin
  • Fiddle
  • Resonator Guitar “Dobro”
  • Bass, Upright (acoustic)
  • junior entertainer (15 and under, multi-instruments)
  • Miscellaneous category to include: Dulcimer, Auto-harp, Harmonica and Clawhammer Banjo

Bluegrass Band Prizes:

*First place Bluegrass Band Prize – Trophy plus $1,000 (agreement to play at the Jumpin’ Bluegrass festival the following year!) 

*Second place Bluegrass Band Prize – Trophy plus $500

*Third place Bluegrass Band Prize – Trophy plus $250. 

Bands must Pre-Register (and pre-pay) before September 30th to pick a time slot!  

Vocalists and individual instrument category prizes:

First place individual categories win a trophy plus $50.

Second place individual category receives a trophy

Third place receives a trophy

Judges for the official Virginia State Competition are professional musicians or music icons in Virginia.
