"A Cut Above" the 2017 Bluegrass Band competition winners are from Bedford,Virginia.  Top notch performers with tight harmony and driving instrumentation.  No wonder they won the $1000.00 first prize!

A Few Details


The Virginia state bluegrass contest has been held every year since 1957. Musicians and bands from all around Virginia have come to show their skills. Each year, a state champion is chosen for each category;

  • junior entertainer (15 and under, multi-instruments)
  • mandolin
  • guitar
  • banjo
  • stand-up bass
  • fiddle
  • resonator guitar
  • female vocalist
  • male vocalist
  • miscellaneous (dulcimer, auto-harp)
  • band competition

Judges are professional musicians or music icons in Virginia. 

Bands must Pre-Register (and pre-pay) before September 30th to pick a time slot!  

First place individual categories win a trophy, and $50.


Second and third place is awarded in each category, and receives a trophy as well.

Band Prizes:

*First place - $1,000 (agreement to play at the Jumpin' Bluegrass festival the following year!) 

*Second place - $500

*Third place gets $250.
